when her beloved twins were babies – but I now realise that much
of what I have done at Bazaar is for her, a s well a s for a sisterly
community. One might think that an acknowledgement of death
should have no place in a magazine brimming with life, but
I believe that our understanding of love and loss is what makes us
cherish the joy and sweetness of all that we hold most dear. Bazaar
is essentially celebratory in tone – we publish the work of
exceptiona l contr ibutors, on subjec ts t hey feel pa ssionately about;
we are not in the business of denigration or scorn. And at a time
when sneering abuse is rampant elsewhere, it feels more important
than ever to champion the people we admire. Hence our annual
Women of the Year Awards, which highlight the greatest artists,
actresses, writers, musicians, campaigners and philanthropists.
But I would also add my entire editorial team to the list of those
who deserve to be applauded; for without their creativity, Bazaar
could not be the success that it is today. We have worked together
with the same closeness that I shared with my sister Ruth; and
t ha nk s to t hem, I have rediscovered t hat sisterliness ca n be
expressed in many different ways. So here’s to a mutual
understanding, and to everyone who loves Bazaar – past, present
and future. It has been the greatest privilege and pleasure to be
editor of this legendary magazine – and I leave it in the hope that
its unique heritage will shine a light for all those who lead the way
forward, in the promising years to come...
