Aged five, Afghan-born
Jamalzadah fled civil war with
her family and found refuge in
Canada. After studying
broadcast journalism, she began
songwriting, and was invited to
perform one of her early pieces,
‘Afghan Girl’, for the Obamas
in the White House. In 2010,
she set up the pioneering
television programme The
Mozhdah Show, hosted in Kabul,
which tackled issues including
violence against women and
mental health. She tells Erica
Wa g ner her ex t r aord i na r y
story in ‘Talking points’.

Canadian film-maker Brishkay
Ahmed. She is my best friend,
my mentor and my inspiration.’

model ‘My mother, Nasrin.
She is my rock, and makes

Who or what makes you feel
empowered? ‘Knowing who
I am and what I want, and not
letting society dictate that
for me.’

The singer and songwriter has
performed at Glastonbury and
was nominated for a Grammy
and a Mercury Prize for last
year’s debut album, Lost &
Found. Aged just 22, she has
already collaborated with
musicians including Drake,
Kendrick Lamar and Stormzy,
and was named the British
Fema le Solo A r tist at t he Br it
Awards in February.

Alba started her acting career
aged 13, and by 19 had received
a Golden Globe nomination for
her leading role in Dark Angel.
In 2012, she co-founded the
Honest Company, specialising
in ethical household goods, and
expanded the business into
beauty in 2015. For this month’s
Bazaar At Work interview, she
talks to Lydia Slater about
juggling motherhood with
managing a business empire.

collection in 2010. In this
