Guests arrived at Gucci’s cruise show to find a quote from the
French historian Paul Veyne spray-painted on a wall hanging:
‘Because only Pagan antiquity could arouse my desire. Because it
was the world of the past. Because it was a world that no longer
exists.’ Alessandro Michele chose Rome’s Musei Capitolini – Italy’s
oldest museum, laid out in a plan designed by Michelangelo in 1536 –
as his location, with models winding through the ancient statues in
darkness (literally – there was a torch on every seat to illuminate
looks). What could be picked out was an elaborate, provocative play
on politics, history and culture: from Mickey Mouse prints to
embroidery on a jacket reading ‘My Body, My Choice’.
