The Disney sequel starring Angelina Jolie was nearly banished
by Joker, despite the latter being in its fourth weekend.
Sunday estimates showed the R-rated superhero pic winning,
but Maleficent 2 ultimately prevailed, if barely.
The historical drama flamed out in its debut nearly two years
after getting caught up in the Harvey Weinstein maelstrom. The
film, with a B CinemaScore, is the first release from 101 Studios,
the company launched by former Weinstein deputy David Glasser.
Roadside is now home of the two top indie platform releases
of the year to date: the Judy Garland biopic, starring Renée
Zellweger, and The Peanut Butter Falcon, which has hit $20 mil-
lion. Both films have exceeded industry expectations.
The Fox hit becomes the first real-
ity show ever to rank as the No. 1
entertainment program for the first
month of the fall season. (American
Idol aired in the spring.)
It’s a promising start for the NBCU
cable network’s latest drama, which
opens smaller than recent episodes
of Suits and Queen of the South, but
pulls triple the audience of Mr. Robot.
