follow each and every one of
them, which continue to
chafe the country so bloody
that we cannot even unify
for five seconds around the
destruction of a highly
influential and effective
terrorist. Who wants to live
in a country where the presi-
dent is so unpopular he is
righteously booed at a base-
ball game? What have we
become? Great Britain?
And somewhere, one
hopes, Ted Turner is regret-
ting the creation of the
24-hour cable news cycle,
which is now, officially, 5%
news and 95% opinionated
blather. At this point, I don’t
even want to hear from
Rachel Maddow unless she
is telling me something that
is actual news. (This, in fact,
she recently did by calling
on any NBC employees who
experienced sexual
harassment by Matt Lauer
to break their NDAs. So I
guess I will still listen to
Rachel Maddow.)
When the Santa Anas
blow, it isn’t just the news
that gives me migraines.
Everyone is excited about
Robert Pattinson and
Willem Defoe in “The Light-
house” and all I can think is,
“Have we really told so
many stories about white
guys that we are reduced to
sticking two of them in a
lighthouse to see what will
happen? And, then, find it a
revelation that masturba-
tion and madness are two of
those things?”
Tom Perotta’s “Mrs.
Fletcher” debuted on HBO,

and while I am always
happy to see Kathryn Hahn
in anything, do I want to see
the story of a divorced wom-
an rediscovering sex as
envisioned by a man? No, I
do not.
Maybe we can blame the
Santa Anas for the recent
Martin Scorsese bashing.
The director recently riled
up “the internet” by sug-
gesting Marvel movies are
more amusement parks
than serious cinema. Well,
he didn’t just suggest it, he
said it, outright and then
was forced to “clarify” his
remarks by explaining there
was nothing wrong with
amusement parks.
First off, if I see one more
story in which “the internet”
has an opinion — for the
record, the internet cannot
have opinions, it can only
display them — I will
scream. Secondly, how is the
fact that Martin Scorsese
doesn’t think much of
superhero movies surpris-
ing in the least? And thirdly,
Marvel needs defenders like
Jeff Bezos needs a Kick-
starter campaign to cover
legal fees. Save your outrage
for things that matter, like
the fact that Ukrainian
oligarchs are, apparently,
continuing to influence our
elections.
I haven’t seen “The
Morning Show” on Apple
TV+ yet, but the new brag-
ging wars over which televi-
sion show is as, or more,
expensive than “The
Crown” has become irritat-
ing and worrisome. For
years now, television has

basked in the new-found
glories of being “cinematic,”
and now, if “The Morning
Show” and “The Politician”
are valid indicators, it has
fallen into the deadly trap of
assuming the bigger the
budget, the bigger the
splash. You know what
makes the biggest splash? A
belly flop.
Also, as much as I love
that my children are discov-
ering “Friends” and other
hits of my youth, there is
such a thing as cultural
regression. How important
is it, really, that future gen-
erations be able to bask in
the wonders of “The Big
Bang Theory” and do we
need a remake of “Dune” or,
dear God in heaven, “Cliff-
hanger”? The “Lord of the
Rings” is about to start
production for Amazon and
guess what? It’s going to be
more expensive than “The
Crown.” Maybe it will be
great, and maybe we, as a
culture and a society, just
need to move the heck on.
See, this is what happens
when the Santa Anas blow;
the biggest Tolkien fan this
side of Middle Earth gets
grouchy about a “Lord of
the Rings” remake. I’m set
to see a screening of Greta
Gerwig’s “Little Women”
this week, and now I’m
wondering if I should wait.
For the winds to die down
and the mood to pass. Be-
cause if “Little Women”
makes me grouchy, there’s
really nothing left, is there?
And I think I just remem-
bered where I put the carv-
ing knife last Christmas.

THE HOT, DRYgusting winds are so powerful this columnist isn’t even looking
forward to seeing Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet in “Little Women.”

Santa Anas blow in

Season of the Grouch

[Grouch,from E1]

Viewership for the first
five games of the World Series
set a record low, but each of
the first three games aver-
aged more viewers than all
but three non-NFL prime-
time programs during the
2019-20 television season.
Fox’s coverage of the se-
ries between the Houston
Astros and Washington Na-
tionals averaged 11.64 million
viewers, helping Fox to have
the most-watched week by
any network since the Super
Bowl, according to live-plus-
same-day figures announced
Tuesday by Nielsen.
The previous low for the
first five games of a World Se-
ries was 12.12 million for the
2014 Series between San
Francisco Giants and Kan-
sas City Royals.
Washington’s 5-4 Game 1
victory over Houston on Oct.
22 was the most-watched of
the opening five games, aver-
aging 12.3 million viewers,
third among prime-time pro-
grams airing between Oct. 21
and Sunday.
The Astros’ 4-1 victory in
Game 3 Friday was fourth for
the week, averaging 12.22 mil-
lion viewers. The Nationals’
12-3 victory Oct. 23 averaged
the smallest audience for a
World Series Game 2, 12.01
million viewers, but was still

fifth for the week.
Since the 2019-20 prime-
time TV season began Sept.
23, other than NFL program-
ming, only the Sept. 24 and
Oct. 1 episodes of the CBS ac-
tion drama “NCIS” (12.58 mil-
lion and 12.52 million) and the
Oct. 13 episode of the CBS
news magazine “60 Minutes”
(12.41 million) averaged
larger audiences than any of
the first three games.
Houston’s 8-1 victory in
Game 4 averaged 10.22 mil-
lion viewers, to be Saturday’s
most-watched prime-time
program and 11th for the
week. The Astros’ 7-1 victory
in Game 5 opposite NBC’s
“Sunday Night Football” was
seventh for the week, averag-
ing 11.39 million viewers. The
World Series has aired on Fox
every year since 2000.
Viewership for most
forms of programming is
down compared with the
past primarily because of
higher viewership of stream-

ing programming, including
the same programs shown on
traditional television.
With all but two of its 21
hours of prime-time pro-
gramming devoted to sports,
Fox averaged 10.94 million
viewers for the week, the
most for any network since
CBS averaged 20.91 million
viewers between Jan. 28-Feb.
3 when it aired Super Bowl
LIII. CBS was second, aver-
aging 6.54 million viewers,
aided by the 41-minute run-
over of its afternoon NFL cov-
erage into prime time in the
Eastern and Central time
zones that averaged 22.71 mil-
lion viewers. The run-over is
not considered a separate
program but is included in
the weekly average.
NBC was third, averaging
6.45 million, followed by ABC,
which averaged 4.3 million.
ABC was the only major
broadcast network without
prime-time NFL program-
ming.
