Greta Thunberg, the teen activist

who has inspired millions to strike for

action on climate change, doesn’t want

awards. She wants people to listen to

science.

The 16-year-old Swededeclined an

environmental prize worth $52,

the Nordic Council, a regional inter-

parliamentary organization, awarded

her.

“I want to thank the Nordic Council

for this award. It is a huge honour. But

the climate movement does not need

any more awards,” she wrote in an In-

stagram poston Tuesday. “What we

need is for our politicians and the peo-

ple in power (to) start to listen to the

current, best available science.”

Thunberg, who is in California for

the Youth Climate Strike in Los

Angeles, also criticized Nordic coun-

tries, which “have the possibility to do

the most. And yet our countries still

basically do nothing.”

The president of the Nordic Council,

Hans Wallmark,said in a statement

that he respected Thunberg’s decision

and that the council will think careful-

ly about what to do with the prize mon-

ey.

The Nordic Council, which consists

of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway,

Sweden, the Faroe Islands, Greenland

and Åland,hands out annual prizes for

literature, youth literature, film, music

and the environment, each worth

350,000 Danish kroner, or $52,000.

In Thunberg’s place, two fellow cli-

mate activists, Sofia and Isabella Ax-

elsson,spoke at a ceremony Tuesday

in Stockholm and read a statement

from Thunberg, saying “what we need

is for our rulers and politicians to listen

to the research.”

Thunberg, who has won and de-

clined other awards, rose to promi-

nence after she began striking on Fri-

days, leaving school to stand in front of

Sweden’s parliament to protest inac-

tion on climate change.

She was recently awarded The

Right Livelihood Award, but last year

she declined the Children’s Climate

Prize, awarded by a Swedish electricity

company, because some of the finalists

flew to the ceremony.

The teen activist sailed across the At-

lantic Ocean to the United States on a

zero emissions sailboat. She has been a

vocal critic of flying because it contrib-

utes to greenhouse gas emissions that

accelerate global warming.

In September, she gave an impas-

sioned speech before the United

NationsClimate Action Summit, where

she scolded world leaders for not acting

quickly and decisively to combat cli-

mate change.

“This is all wrong. I shouldn’t be up

here, I should be back in school on the

other side of the ocean,” she said.

“People are suffering, people are dy-

ing, entire ecosystems are collapsing ...

and all you talk about is money and eter-

nal fairy tales of economic growth. How

dare you?”

the weather is more typical of January
in portions of the western and central
U.S.
"A wave of Arctic air has infiltrated
the northern tier of the United States
this week, shattering record lows, and
threatening as many as 70 (other record
lows) through Halloween," AccuWeath-
er said.
Subzero cold was recorded as far
south as the Grand Canyon on Wednes-
day morning, the Weather Channel said.
Big Piney, Wyoming, plunged to minus
24 degrees before sunrise Wednesday.
Notorious cold spot Peter Sinks,
Utah, dipped to an incredible minus 45
degrees early Wednesday. This ap-
peared to be the coldest October tem-
perature on record anywhere in the
Lower 48 states, according to Utah-
based meteorologist Timothy Wright.
High temperatures Wednesday were
forecast to be 30 to 50 degrees below
normal across Colorado, Texas and the
central Plains, according to meteorolo-
gist Ryan Maue of BAM Weather.
On Tuesday, the high temperature in

Denver hit only 18 degrees, which tied

for the coldest October day on record

in the city, the National Weather Ser-

vice reported. About a half-foot of

snow added to the wintry feel.

Denver's low temperature Thursday

morning could come within a few de-

grees of the city's all-time coldest Oc-

tober temperature of minus 2 degrees,

the Weather Channel said.

The biting cold air for this time of

year is being funneled southward from

Canada into the western and central

United States by a southward plunge

of the jet stream, the Weather Channel

reported. That dip in the jet stream will

slowly migrate eastward late in the

week, taking the colder air with it.

By Friday, while the intensity of the

cold will ease, even the Gulf Coast and

Eastern Seaboard will see a switch to

chilly weather, the Capital Weather

Gang said. Highs will hover only in the

50s from Friday through the weekend

in cities such as Washington, Philadel-

phia and New York.

While much of the nation freezes,

Florida is seeing record highs on

Wednesday, Maue said, with temper-

atures soaring to near 90 degrees in

Orlando, Tampa and Miami.
