veryone has a want for a
secret space,” says architect
Tom Surman. He is explain-
ing theappeal of hisWriter’s
Shed. At night, light shines
through the gaps between the slats of its
cedar frame; theglow of its wood-
burning stove is visible from thehouse.
With its elegant, angled shape, it looks
like an enormous illuminated jewellery
box nestling in suburban Hackney.

The shed was one of the first projects
undertaken by Surman Weston, Sur-
man’s London-based practice. “We
wanted to make it inviting, something
that would draw you down from the
house.” It is certainly nothing like the
spider-ridden wooden storage huts
stuffedwith bikes and lawnmowers,
usually found in London’s back gardens.
