INTRO BY DAVID JENKINShen the Safdie brothers’ Good Time played at the Cannes Film
Festival in 2017, there were a flurry of complimentary tweets
comparing the film to various classic movies. Through their own Twitter
account, the brothers combed through the responses and confirmed or
denied whether the titles mentioned had influenced or inspired them.
In that spirit, we took down some notes while watching their new film,
Uncut Gems, and jotted down a few classic titles that came to mind,
such as Karel Reisz’s The Gambler, Jacques Demy’s Bay of Angels
and Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets, among others. We then pulled
together a team of our favourite illustrators and tasked them with
creating an ostentatious piece of jewellery inspired by these movies.
