‘I wanted to create something innovative and relevant to today,
yet instantly recognisable through its iconic symbols,’ says the
designer Donatella Versace of her latest collection for the Italian
fashion house. And so, in a nod to the famous dress worn by
Elizabeth Hurley in 1994, models strode down the catwalk
with a Nirvana soundtrack blaring, in distressed pieces held
together with embellished safety pins. The brand’s tailoring
heritage was reflected in oversize tweed jackets with acid-
bright linings, and grungy cardigans with frayed hems, while
a new handbag line, Virtus, also made its debut. And it was up
to another Nineties icon – Stephanie Seymour – to close the
show. ‘She is a true Versace woman – confident, daring, smart
and strong,’ says Donatella. ‘A woman who isn’t afraid to step
outside her comfort zone, because she knows that imperfec-
tion is the new perfection.’ LUCY HALFHEAD
