enormous privilege to hear these women talk about their
triumphs and their trials, what I treasure almost more than any-
thing else are their hard-won insights into success that, over the
years, have transformed how I, too, work and live.
Sometimes, the most casual observation can strike a chord: over-
whelmed by my daily agenda, I was impressed by the writer Julia
Hobsbawm’s comment last year that we should cherish our diaries

‘like our bodies’ and refuse to allow them to be invaded without
our express permission. And it is also as a result of advice I received
at the Summit that I have a note stuck to my computer reading:
‘Would you go tonight? ’ A glance at this successfully prevents
me from blithely accepting invitations just because they’re
months away.
In anticipation of this forthcoming meeting of minds, and espe-
cially for the benefit of those who are unable to join us on the day,
