UPDATE

Small Back, Big Numbers

RUNNING BACK Jaleel McLaughlin appeared in the Oct. 22–29, 2018,
edition of FACES IN THE CROWD after rushing for 340 yards against West
Liberty, a record for Division II Notre Dame College (Cleveland). A state
champion point guard and sprinter at Forest Hills High in Marshville,
N.C., the 5' 9", 175-pound McLaughlin was just getting started: As a
freshman he led all NCAA divisions with 2,421 yards (6.4 per carry)
and earned All-America honors, lifting the Falcons to their first national
semifinal. Now he’s setting the pace in D-II with 921 yards on 8.0 yards
per rush for fifth-ranked Notre Dame (5–0). “I still have that bad taste in
my mouth that we lost in the Final Four, where I could’ve finished some
plays and didn’t,” McLaughlin says. “That’s what I keep holding on to,
just trying to bring this team a championship.” —D.F.
