Before the series got all
moody and obsessed
with vehicles, Jak And
Daxter: The Precursor
Legacy was a bright, colourful
debut that teased at the scope
Naughty Dog was getting a taste
for. With some gloriously
challenging platforming moments
and a new helping of Naughty
Dog’s trademark humour, TPL had
more in common with the fresh
and open level design of
Insomniac’s Spyro The Dragon
series than it did Mr Bandicoot.

This PS4 launch window
title has all the usual
hallmarks of one, such as
excessive touchpad
usage and even graffiti tagging
sections that have you turn the
controller on its side and shake it
like a spray can. But it’s also still a
visual treat. Lead character Delsin
Rowe (Troy Baker) is a
superpowered “conduit” who can
take on the powers of others – and
each power features stunning
particle effects. Traversal around
Seattle still feels fluid, and though
open worlds have come a long way
since, it’s still a great setting for
an unforgettable adventure.

It’s not about what you kill... it’s about how you kill it. Emphasising style and substance in a joyously cocky hack ‘n’ slash romp, DMC gave the
action genre a right kick up the jacksy. Intriguingly, Dante’s devilish adventure was envisioned as an early prototype for Resident Evil 4 before
Capcom saw sense and realised the concept could blossom under a new brand. The bosses remain brilliant (ah, that lava spidery thing...) and its
castle oh-so-evocative. Rarely has a PlayStation game exuded such cool. As with DMC3, this version on PS Now is the PS3’s HD Collection.

During making
this list I’ve been
glancing over
at PS Now’s
American games
list with envy: Dark
Souls 2, Dark Sector, Resident
Evil 4, and Valkyria Chronicles
Remastered are just some
of the games I’d love to see
come to the UK’s service. It’s
odd that we have Resident Evil
Revelations 1 and 2 but not the
original quadrilogy. That said,
it suggests these games will
be heading our way, as well as
many more besides. As Sony
adds more titles each month,
both PS4 and from PlayStation’s
distant past, PS Now can only
get better.

The most recent main
entry in the Fallout series
is as expansive as you’d
expect from a Bethesda
game – which certainly means
you’ll get the most out of your PS
Now subscription. Set within “The
Commonwealth”, which
encompasses post-apocalyptic
Boston and the surrounding area,
you venture out of Vault 111 and
must both avenge your spouse and
track down your kidnapped son.
Though mostly you’ll just be
exploring the strange environs and
inhabitants of the wasteland. With
the new ability to create and
develop your own settlements,
there’s no shortage of things to do.

If you only know one thing
about Ico it’s that there’s
a button that’s devoted
to holding hands. Scratch
that, if you only know one thing
about Ico it’s that it’s one of the
most emotionally stirring and
beautiful experiences in
PlayStation history. Then you need
to know about that hand-clasping
button. An escape story starring a
horned pre-adolescent boy and his
mysterious female companion, the
castle-based puzzle adventure is a
niche hit that never got the
mainstream love it deserved. On
PS Now we get the edition from
the PS3’s HD Collection.

Dirt Rally’s more
accessible, sim-cade
cousin manages to drive
the fine line between
being realistic, challenging, and
forgiving in just the right measure.
Mixing traditional rally events and
the more sim-cade rallycross
(where circuits mix tarmac and
dirt sections), there’s something
for everyone here. It looks
stunning, and handling feels
responsive. In career mode you
need to manage your team and
brand as well as rack up those
hard-thought wins. One of PS4’s
genuinely great racing games.

On PS Now we get the
Metro Redux package,
which are PS4
remasters of the original
game, Metro 2033, and its sequel
Metro Last Light. Set in the tunnels
beneath a destroyed Moscow, a
nuclear winter rages overhead as
nightmarish radioactive creatures
and rival tribes fight one another
for survival. Cutting-edge at the
time, these remasters still stand
the test of time, making it worth
discovering the series’ roots.

Dishonored’s redemption
story sees bodyguard
Corvo Attano accused of
murdering his Empress
and fleeing to the walled city of
Dunwall to clear his name and seek
revenge. Like a mix of BioShock
and Thief, this smart first-person
adventure enables you to use
stealth, melee combat, magical
powers, and unlocked abilities to
clear missions how you wish. With
a cast that includes Carrie Fisher,
Michael Madsen, and Lena Headey,
plus fine art direction, Dishonored
has the blockbuster delivery to
match its non-linear concept.
