utlast’s core game gave us more than the
willies but the DLC is on an entirely different
level. We’ll try not to spoil the story as it’s worth
seeing through to the bitter end for yourself,
but this post-game prologue follows a different
protagonist as he attempts to escape Mount
Massive Asylum’s violently deluded patients.
Asylum resident and serial killer Eddie Gluskin
will leave a deep impression on you as he pursues
your protagonist with the intention of making him
his ‘wife.’ Gluskin’s wooing is less a chocolates-
and-flowers affair and more a castration-and-
dismemberment situation... as you find out while
watching him work on another victim just before
becoming more intimately acquainted yourself.
Game designer Philippe Morin explains: “Outlast is
a lot about coming up with moments that will make
men cringe,” and says this sequence was inspired
by the torture scene in Wes Craven’s movie The
Serpent And The Rainbow. He also tells us it was a
lot of work as the team had to balance the narrative
and the gameplay, offeringjustenough agency as the
horrible scene unfolds. Um, well, thanks, Red Barrels.

s videogame adaptations go, Alien: Isolation
succeeds by carving out its own space within
the film mythos and telling a new story that
makes the most of its medium.
Aboard the Sevastopol as Ripley’s daughter, Amanda,
nowhere is safe – especially not when you’re trying
to save. To record your progress, you must find a
terminal and save manually. Any hostile force can
sneak up behind you and send you all the way back
to the save point before. Hiding in a locker doesn’t
guarantee safety for long, and don’t get us started
on scrabbling through the vents. Even after picking
up the flamethrower in mission 10, playing a deadly
game of cat-and-mouse with the Alien in the tight
confines of the server farm is no walk in the park.
Nowhere is safe in this bug hunt.
