Peter Handke won the 2019 Nobel
Prize for Literature in a decision
that has been widely criticized. In
spite of praise for his writing, Handke
has been called an apologist for far-
right Serbian nationalism, and since
the Nobel announcement, the choice
to honor Handke has been widely condemned, both across the internet
and in a statement from PEN America.
Polish author Olga Tokarczuk was given the 2018 Nobel Prize in
Literature (last year’s prize was delayed because of a sexual harass-
ment scandal), and her selection has generally been praised, despite
what some see as her leftist views.The National Book Foundation
named the five finalists in each of its
five categories. The winner in each
category will be announced at a cere-
