If you’ve found a way
to talk about romance,
please call Anne Hatha-
way. “I feel like we’re
losing our language to
describe it,” says the
Oscar winner, 36, who just
might have managed to
relearn it in John Carney’s
celeb-packed anthology
Modern Love, an eight-
episode Amazon Prime
Video series (Oct. 18)
based on the infamous
New York Times column.
Hathaway wasn’t a
regular reader of the col-
umn (she’s more of a
real-estate-section gal)
but immediately warmed
to its message. “It’s not
trying to carry with it the
wisdom of the great novel
about love,” she says. “It’s
just this delicious, digest-
ible morsel that makes
me feel good—but I think
it’s nice that it makes you
feel something.”
In her episode, she
plays a bipolar woman

looking for self-accep-
tance—so talking to the
column’s writer, Terri
Cheney, was imperative.
“If we’re not going to
make this feel real to the
truth of Terri Cheney’s
experience, then we’re
just exploiting,” Hathaway
says. “The number-one
priority was making sure
that we represented
this woman’s courage
and her journey.” What
the actress ultimately
creates is a multifaceted
portrait of a woman
dealing with her disorder,
not shying away from
the heavy lows but also
rejoicing in her highs
via blazing musical num-
bers. Yet in song or not,
Hathaway’s heart is
bared. “I don’t feel like
a gushy, sentimental idiot
for saying that we just
need connection,” she
beams. How so very
modern indeed.

→ The Mandalorian isn’t
the only galaxy-expand-
ing Star Wars prequel-
sequel this November.
While Jon Favreau’s
series examines the time
between Episodes VI
and VII, the multiplatform
Fallen Order will fill in
gaps between Episode III
and Rogue One, following
skilled Jedi-in-training
Cal Kestis (played by
Shameless’ Cameron
Monaghan) after the
infamous Order 66.
“We thought it was a very
compelling time to tell
a story about a Jedi on
the run,” says game
director Stig Asmussen.
“It’s a [setting] we and
Lucasfilm were really
excited about exploring.”
And if that’s not enticing
enough, the game
(available Nov. 15) also
canonizes Cal’s adorable
“buddy droid” BD-1, who
Asmussen calls part
“loyal dog” and part
“Woodstock from Charlie
Brown.” BB-8, better
watch your BB-back.
