MURDER IN SINALOA
I imagine that with all those
travel miles in dangerous
places these surfers
probably started feeling
comfortable and let their
guard down [“A Bad Break in
Sinaloa” by Jason McGahan].
After just a few months in
sketchy places I did too. It’s
never intentional; you just
start thinking there’s no need
to worry. The dude who sold
me my surf van actually
knew these guys and said
they were awesome.

LEBLANC’S CAR CRED
A lot of people didn’t know
that Matt LeBlanc was a
gearhead so there was
skepticism around his
joiningTop Gear as a host.
But his reputation is getting
better thanks to stories like
“Matt LeBlanc: A True
Gearhead?” [by Jesse Will].
LeBlanc is a natural behind
the wheel and driving a car
while talking on camera
is a difficult skill to develop.

In his first video for the
show he had the poise of
someone who’d been doing
the job for years. He’s got
the right credentials — it
takes serious dedication
to own a 911 GT2 RS as he
does. I look forward to
seeing what he does.

TURNER’S LAND GRAB
Aaron Gulley’s article about
Ted Turner [“Crashing at
Turner’s Place”] demon-
strates the hypocrisy of
Turner’s brand of liberalism.
He’ll open his “massive
collection of private land” to
the paying public but if the
average Joe environmental-
ist wants in he’ll have to
openhiswalletwide—these
destinations are for “upscale
tourists.” Turner is about
one thing: making money
for himself.

Oliver White is lucky
to have the means
to pursue these
species. He must be
a helluva angler.

MONSTERS ON THE FLY
Oliver White’s project in
Guyana [“Casting for
Giants” by Paul Kvinta] is
an example of how anglers
and outdoor enthusiasts
can make a huge difference
on both a social and an
economic level. While a
quest for large exotic
jungle fish may have been
what brought him to
Guyana in the first place
his appreciation for the
places that fishing takes us
has now created something
much larger and more
significant: a nonprofit
that’s generating money
for communities this far off
the grid and making a
difference in peoples’ lives.
Having fished with Oliver
for many years I can say
that he is an individual
pursuing his dreams for all
the right reasons.
