Therearemany bidding con-
ventions apartnership may
adoptthat, when the right hand
comesalong, canprove very ef-
fective.Consider thisdealfrom
the 19 7 0 world teamchampion-
shipmatch between Norwayand
the UnitedStates.
With Norway North-South,
the bidding went as shown.
The two-spade bid,asplayed
by the Norwegianpair,indi-
catedahand with five hearts
and either five diamonds or five
clubs.
Byusing this convention, often
calledaMichaels cuebid, North
wasable toimmediatelypaint
apicture ofhishand.South
ultimately landedin five clubs,
which he easilymade, losing
only two diamond tricks.
At the other table, withaU.S.
pair holding the North-South
cards, the bidding went:
The Americans were notplay-
ing Michaels, so North overcalled
athisathis first turn with two
hearts.After East bidtwospades,
Southjumped tofourhearts, but
hefound himselffaced witha
difficult decision one round later
when West bidfourspades.
South elected to double, which
did not turn out well when West
lost onlyaspade,aheartanda
clubtomakehis contract.Asa
result, Norwaygained 990points
on the deal, scoring 400pointsat
the first tableand 590pointsat
the second table.
One caneasily sympathize
with the AmericanSouthfor
choosing to doublefourspades
insteadofgoing oninhearts.
Heknewfar lessabout North’s
hand thanhiscounterpartat
the first table, who hadmuch
more explicit information to
leanon.
