Gala in the Garden
Los Angeles, Oct. 12

Garden Variety
Westwood’s contemporary
art hub The Hammer has
for 17 years welcomed two
honorees to the same stage
— one from Hollywood, the
other from the art world
— at its annual fundraiser.
Tributes this year went
to Jordan Peele (2) and
groundbreaking feminist
artist Judy Chicago (1) —
feted by author Roxane
Gay (6) and icon Gloria
Steinem (1), respectively,
in front of guests like To m
Ford, J.J. Abrams (6) and
Donna Langley. The gala
will be remembered for its
record-breaking $2.7 mil-
lion raised, Chicago’s
rousing 18-minute
speech, Beck (5) and
Chris Martin’s (5) lively
performance and Peele’s
poignant speech: “I dream
less about making a com-
mentary about society
than I do about getting a
laugh, a scream or scaring
anybody ... but apparently
that involves a search of
the same thing, and that’s
truth.” — CHRIS GARDNER

Paltrow Honored
“I didn’t prepare anything
because I don’t think
I believe in thank-you
speeches,” said amfAR
Award of Courage honoree
Gwyneth Paltrow (9)
following a humorous
introduction by pals Dan
Bucatinsky (9) and Don
Roos (9). “Courage is
something that I strive
to have all the time,” she
said of the honor. “Since
I’ve turned 40, I’ve sort of
found the courage to be
really who I am and speak
from the truest place.”
Auctioneer Simon de
Pury helped raise north
of $1 million from the Milk
Studios stage for items
including five paintings
donated by art world
guru Larry Gagosian, the
night’s other Courage
Award recipient, who did
not attend. “He is on a hot
lead to score a fantastic
deal on the Mona Lisa,”
joked musician Robbie
Robertson, who accepted
on his behalf. Christina
Aguilera (8) closed the
night with a trio of hits,
“Ain’t No Other Man,” “It’s
a Man’s World” and “Lady
Marmalade” for attendees
including Eva Longoria,
Lea Michele (7), Paris
Jackson, Rumer Willis and
Cheyenne Jackson. — C.G.
