YOUR FIX:JUNK SNACKS
After-efects:While food is fuel
for your body, appeasing your
appetite with processed, junk
snacks like chips and ‘diet’ chakli,
between the weak hours of 4-8pm,
is literally the worst. According
to Tyrewala, fast food isn’t
necessarily bad, but in many (read
most) cases it’s highly processed
and contains large amounts of
carbohydrates, added sugar,
unhealthy fats and salt (sodium).
When fast food frequently
replaces nutritious foods in your
diet, it can lead to poor nutrition,
poor health and weight gain, and
being overweight is a risk factor
for a variety of chronic health
problems. Vicious circle, really.

You reach out for one in a
weak moment, unable to
think of anything else.
And once you give in to
the temptation and the
initial rush subsides, you’re
awash in a sea of regret. A woman’s
relationship with caffeine, sugar and
junk food is like a tryst with a man you
know is bad for you. The only differ-
ence—it’s probably easier to detox
from men than those wily weaknesses.
Lucky for you, we’ve called in the big
guns. Meet Houston-educated health,
food and detox consultant and founder
of catering brand The Detox, Sneha
Tyrewala, who believes food is the best
natural healer. Consultant to the likes

YOUR FIX:CAFFEINE
(cofee, tea, ‘diet’ coke)
After-efects:You think it’s
ideal to banish 8am (11am and
3pm) bleary eyes (damn, that
skimmed-milk Frappucino
tastessogood) but this central
nervous system stimulant
only makes you temporarily
energetic and awake while
causing jitters. Says Tyrewala,
“Withdrawal or overdose can
cause problems like insomnia,
nervousness and restlessness,
stomach irritation, increased
heart rate and lots more.”
Craving cafeine? Cheat
with homemade detox drinks
infused with fruits
and vegetables.

YOUR FIX:ADDED SUGAR
After-efects:Work fatigue,
hangover exhaustion, Monday blues
and just ‘low’ moments—sugary
goodies are a popular quick fix.
But an increased intake of added
sugars not only makes you fat
(duh!), it also causes problems like
diabetes, liver damage, abdominal
obesity, elevated blood sugar and
more. Tyrewala explains, “Added
sugars are high-calorie but have no
nutritional value. According to the
American Heart Association, most
Americans and Indians take in twice
the amount of sugar recommended
for optimal health. All those extra
calories add extra weight, which
can cause heart disease.” While it
may not seem as gratifying at first,
replace candy with fructose-free
smoothies and detox water.

The ultimate 7-day detox plan

START IT
RIGHT
Squeeze the juice
of half a lemon in
a cup of hot water
and add organic
honey—drink in
the am to kick-start
digestion, cleanse
the system and
neutralise pH levels.

SWEAT IT
OUT
During a detox,
exercise for an
hour daily —pant
and puf and
sweat. Vigorous
exercise increases
lymph fl ow and
circulation to
sweat out toxins.

KEEP IT RAW
Cooking kills
nutrition— stick
to raw, lightly
grilled or
steamed foods
as they contain
more nutrients
and enzymes.

CLEAR THE
MIND
Try 15 minutes of
slow, deep belly
breathing. Place
hands palm down
on your lower
belly and feel
your tummy rise
with each breath.
Breathe out and
feel it drop.

DRINK UP
Drink three
litres of fl uids
daily as this
will help move
the lymph and
support kidney
detoxifi cation.
Choose from
pure spring
water, fresh
The Detox
juice and herbal
detox teas.

BRUSH UP
THAT BODY
Body brushing and
daily massages
support circulation
and increase skin
detoxifi cation.
Deep-tissue
massages open
up your lymph
nodes to release
acid, toxic and
water holds.

CHEW ON IT
Aim to chew
each mouthful
of food 10 to 12
times. Bringing
mindfulness to
mealtimes improves
digestion, allowing
you to feel a sense
of fullness without
overeating.
