rience for guests around the notion of
the shared table”) tomorrow morning?
This brings me to note that food is in-
creasingly part of the design world.
The Swedish furniture brand Hem
even did a mid-day Ice Cream Social!
Juxtaposition was a running theme
at Bottega Veneta, the next stop, as
well. Creative director Tomas Maier
presented the brand’s ultra-modern
woven sofas in a centuries-old palazzo
with exquisite frescoes on the walls.

Next up at the Duvetica showroom
was a duality of a different kind: the
Murano-based glassware brand Carlo
Moretti’s rainbow-coloured pieces dis-
played against the stark minimalism of

At the Swarovski launch the
next morning, to mark the
brand’s foray into the interior
space, Nadja Swarovski spoke
about her plans to invite de-
signers to explore the “non-

bling” aspect of crystals. True to the
brief, her roster of designers explored
ideas like combining crystal with mar-
ble (Aldo Bakker), printing on crystal
(Tomás Alonso) and presenting it in its
raw, uncut form (Fredrikson Stallard).
Going slightly off the map later in the
day, I was rewarded with the discovery
of an exciting Istanbul-based global
glassware brand, Nude, as part the
Wallpaper* exhibition. Another high-
light this year was the Hermès launch,
which had Mexican architect Mauricio
Rocha build a pavilion bang in the mid-
dle of the Teatro Vetra. It had taken
three weeks to construct, we were told,
and housed a new collection of furni-
ture by the Pritzker Prize-winning ar-
chitect Rafael Moneo.

FAIR PLAY
The Fiera Milano convention centre is
a frenzy of activity during Salone del
Mobile. But the real action is beyond
the exhibition grounds. Vogue picks...

ROSSANA ORLANDI
Rossana Orlandi’s gallery, Spazio Orlandi,
is always a great place to discover
standout names, which this year included
the Kolkata-based design brand Scarlet
Splendour. Founded by Ashish Bajoria
and Suman Kanodia with the goal of
merging great design with luxury, the
brand presented a collection called
Terra by Italian designers Dario
Contessotto and Mirco Colussi.

‘50 MANGA CHAIRS’ BY NENDO
The prolifi c Japanese design studio
Nendo paid homage to their home
country with an installation inspired by
the iconography of Manga: sweat drops,
lightning, jumping and crying were just
some of the symbols evident through the
arrangement of 50 sophisticated stainless
steel chairs. For those who missed it,
the exhibition will be re-staged at the
New York gallery Friedman Benda from
September 8 to October 15.

TRIENNALE MILANO
The International Exposition of Triennale
Milano was back after a gap of 20 years.
The glorious 21st edition, titled Design
After Design, included highlights from
around the world—including the ‘gadda
throne’ by Gunjan Gupta from India.
The Palazzo dell’Arte (home to
Triennale museum) inaugurated
a standout exhibition titled
Rooms, an exploration of new
living concepts by Italian masters
and young designers. It includes
a geometrical prison-like room
by Alessandro Mendini and the
“world’s fi rst Internet of Things sofa”
by Carlo Ratti Associati.
It’s open to visitors until
September 12—don’t miss it.
