Age 98, of Plymouth, formerly of
Natick, died October 15, 2019, with
her family by her side. She was born
on January 18, 1921, in Ipswich to
James and Virginia Barakas. Her dad
was a shoemaker and her mother was a
homemaker.
She met her husband, Nicholas Mar-
athas at a Greek dance in Cambridge,
MA, and they were married on October
12th, 1941. They lived in Cambridge
and Natick where they raised three
children. They loved spending summers
together at their home on Martha’s
Vineyard where you could always find
her with friends sunbathing on the
beach, attending summer concerts
at the Tabernacle or making Greek
pastries for their restaurant, Nick’s
Lighthouse.
She was an active member of the
Ladies Philoptochos Society of St.
Demetrios in Weston, MA, where she
volunteered many hours of her time
within the church and visiting the Hel-
lenic nursing home in Canton, MA. Her
interests included reading, knitting,
exercising and sharing Greek traditions
with her family.
Mrs. Marathas is survived by her
sister, Ellie Najem of Peabody, MA, her
children William Marathas and his
wife Pam of Randolph, MA, Virginia
Gianelis-McDonough and her husband
James of Hanover, MA, and Lisa Searle
and her husband Dennis of Maynard,
MA. She is also survived by eleven
grandchildren and eight great-grand-
children. She was preceded in death by
her husband, Nicholas Marathas, and
three of her sisters, Ethel Kalivas, Betty
Krupsky, and Christine Tolias.
Visitation at St. Demetrios Greek
Orthodox Church, 57 Brown St.,
Weston, Monday, October 21 from
10:00-11:30am, followed by a Funeral

KENNEDY, Louise E.

Of Weymouth, passed away suddenly
on October 12, 2019. Louise graduated
from Archbishop Williams High School
and Quincy City Hospital Nursing
School. Louise furthered her education,
graduating from Boston College with a
B.S. in Nursing. Later, she was awarded
a coveted Robert Wood Johnson Foun-
dation scholarship to Boston College,
where she earned her Master’s Degree
in Nursing. Louise cared for numerous
patients as a nurse practitioner with
Harbor Medical Associates, in Wey-
mouth and Scituate. She cherished her
relationships with the doctors, her col-
leagues, and friends that provided her
with mentorship and support. Louise
was an active member in The Immacu-
late Conception Church in Weymouth
and developed many lasting friendships
in the parish. Louise was the beloved
daughter of the late Louis J. and
Olympia (Salvucci) Mezzetti of Quincy.
She was the treasured wife of Edward
W. Kennedy for 54 years. Louise is
survived by her daughter, Kathleen
of Arlington, and her son, David, and
his wife, Kate and their two children,
Olivia and Jack, all of Kingston. She is
also survived by her sister Carole Fried-
man of Braintree. The family would like
to give special thanks to the amazing
nurses and compassionate doctors at
the Neuroscience Intensive Care unit
at the Massachusetts General Hospital.
Relatives and friends are respectfully

    1942 and graduated from Needham
    High School in 1948, and A.I.C. in
    Springfield, MA, 1952, and had served
    in the Army during Korean War. He
    worked at the Carter Co. in Needham
    and the Hano Company. He was mar-
    ried to Ellen Quinn Hylen for 60 years,
    until she passed away in 2015. Ron
    leaves a brother, Bob (Class of 1950)
    and many nieces and nephews. His
    younger brother David preceded Ron
    in death. During his years in Needham,
    MA he was a dedicated volunteer for
    The Red Cross, The Needham Histori-
    cal Society and a Little League Baseball
    Coach. Relatives and friends are invited
    to attend his Funeral Service on Sat.
    Oct. 19 at 11 AM in the Eaton Funeral

Passed away on October
14th. He was the son of
George Leo Smith and
Mary Farrell, born in Wethersfield,
Connecticut. He attended Kingswood
Oxford School in West Hartford, Trinity
College, Georgia Tech and Harvard
Business School. George enlisted
into the Army in World War II, was
wounded and taken as a prisoner of
war, was decorated with a Purple Heart
medal and served again during the
Korean Conflict.
After earning an MBA from Harvard
and teaching accounting at MIT,
George had an extensive tenure as a
Business Executive for over 50 years in
New England and Nashville, Tennes-
see. His most recent residence was
the Jeanne Jugan Nursing Home in
Somerville, Massachusetts.
George is survived by his wife, Helen
Marie Newby Smith of Brooklyn, New
York. The couple met in Heidelberg,
Germany and were married for 67
years. George is also survived by six
children: Therese M. Smith (Jack Den-
nis), Christopher J. Smith (SandraJean
Grasso), Patricia M. Smith (John T.
Zipperer), George M. Smith (Cathy
Weldon Smith), Monica M. Smith and
Stephen J. Smith (Sally Burk Smith).
One child, Patrick Joseph, died at birth.
George and Helen were blessed with
nine grandchildren.
George was an Eagle Scout, served
as a Scoutmaster in the Boy Scouts of
America, was a devout Roman Catholic
and a strong supporter and volunteer
in each parish of residence as long as
he was able.
Visiting Hours:Visitation is
October 19 at 10 a.m., and the Funeral
Mass is at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel at
the Jeanne Jugan Nursing Home at 186
