BRIDGEMANIndia mourns the Mahatma
Crowds numbering an estimated one million
line the route of the funeral cortège of Mahatma
Gandhi, figurehead of the Indian independence
campaign, as it heads towards Delhi’s cremation
ghat on the Yamuna river on 31 January 1948.
He had been assassinated the previous day by
Nathuram Godse, a fanatical Hindu nationalist
a ngered by Ga ndhi ’s attempts to accommodate
the needs of India’s Muslims during the
country’s partition the year before.
