  1. By the time the leaders met in Yalta, the Red Army had occupied much of
    eastern Europe and was within striking distance of Berlin, giving Stalin a strong
    bargaining position at his meetings with Churchill and Roosevelt, and playing to his
    belief that “whoever occupies a territory also imposes on it his own social system”
