This print of two women being
menaced by Death and the Devil –
quite the double-act – was made
from a 1520s etching by German
artist Daniel Hopfer. He is thought
to have pioneered the use of etching
as a technique in printmaking as
early as 1500 – a development that
expanded the range of artists using
the medium. A new exhibition at
New York’s Met Museum explores
this pivotal era through a collection
of examples from the Renaissance
world, including works by renowned
figures such as Pieter Bruegel the
Elder and Parmigianino, as well
as lesser-known names.
