hat the war of 1812 extended beyond its
titular year is but a historical footnote.
That Canadians successfully repelled
Americans bent on “manifesting their des-
tiny” and annexing British-Canadian territory is a
source of national pride. But on this day in 1814, a
small American unit of about 900 soldiers
marched along the Chippewa River to Cook’s Mills,
a tiny British-Canadian community located in
what is now known as Welland, Ont. The Amer-
icans took cover in the surrounding forest, but
British reconnaissance was alerted to the enemy’s
presence. A British-Canadian force of about 750
fired artillery shots into the forest in the hopes of
drawing their opponents out. Instead, the Amer-
icans remained camouflaged and opened fire
themselves. Realizing this chess game was hurtling
toward a stalemate, the British-Canadian troops
withdrew. The Americans abandoned the site a day
later, and joined their countrymen in the mass
retreat of the British-Canadian territory by Amer-
ican forces on Oct. 21. Thirteen people died at
Cook’s Mills – one British soldier and 12 Americans.
