InJanuary,1967,myfather,HaroldTown,wasattheheightofhisfameasaCanadianabstractpainter.Hewasonhiswayto
ChicagotoattendamajorexhibitionofhisworkarrangedbyhorrorlegendandartconnoisseurVincentPrice.Travellingby
train(Haroldhatedflying),hewasaccompaniedbyJohnReeves,thecelebratedportraitphotographer,whocapturedmy
fatherathissartorialbest.Asalittlegirl,Iwasalwaysmesmerizedtoseemyfathergetdresseduplikethis.Mostdays,he
worejeans,aturtleneckandanarmyjacketashewalkedtotheStudioBuilding,theplacewhereheworkedintheRosedale
ravine.Butforspecialoccasions,hewouldtransform,puttingonhisantiquewatchfobandcuf flinks.Sometimeshewould
letmechoosehisnecktieorpocketsquare.Myfatherlovedvintageclothes,andhewaswellknownforhisfashionsense.In
1968,theTorontoTelegramnamedhimtoitsbest-dressedlist.Haroldwrote:“Old,goodclothesarestylish.Styleisnot
Vogueandsuchmagazines.It’swhatyouchooseforyourself,regardlessoftheirdictates.”Haroldhadfirmopinionsabout
clothes–andjustabouteverythingelse.Itoftengothimintotrouble,ashearguedwitheveryonefromartcriticsto
curators.Today,morethan50yearslater,he’sbecomeaniconicfigure.HaroldTownprovedthatCanadacouldproduce
innovativeartthatisimportantontheinternationalstage.Andhedidsowithpanache.SHELLEYTOWN
