Help! There’s a

LIPSTICK STAIN

on one of my

cloth napkins.

Is it ruined? — PAMP.

A: Not at all. And once you know

my little trick, you’ll kiss paper

napkins goodbye! Rubbing a

lipstick stain will only smear it and

push it deeper into the fabric,

so start by placing the napkin,

stain facedown, on a paper towel.

Gently dab the back of the stain

with a makeup-remover wipe. If

you can, squeeze a little liquid

from the wipe to help dissolve

the lipstick even faster. Keep

dabbing until the lipstick stops

transferring to the towel (you

may need a second wipe). And

don’t forget to rotate the paper

towel to a clean area as it absorbs

the lipstick so the stain won’t

transfer back. Next, rub in liquid

laundry detergent or apply a

prewash stain remover. Wash it in

the hottest water that’s safe for

the fabric with a fabric-safe

bleach. Finally, air-dry it until

you’re sure the stain is gone.
