ANTHONY RAMOSIn 2014, when Anthony Ramos first heard about Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hip-hop history
lesson, the fledgling project was dubbed Hamilton Mixtape. The Puerto Rican actor,
then 22, was three years out of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, and
auditioned with the aptly titled “My Shot,” Aaron Burr’s hungry headliner. (The song
was ultimately performed by Leslie Odom Jr., who earned a 2016 Tony Award for
Best Actor in a Musical—one of Hamilton’s 11 Tony wins.) Ramos performed with
the ensemble onstage at the Beacon Theatre that 2016 night, having originated the
dual roles of John Laurens and Philip Hamilton. Since Hamilton’s success, Ramos,
now 28, has transitioned to the screen, as Lady Gaga’s best friend in A Star Is Born;
as a freckle-faced suitor in Spike Lee’s She’s Gotta Have It reboot; and as a witness
to a police murder in last year’s prescient drama Monsters and Men. Come June, he’ll
return to his Broadway roots with In the Heights, a movie adaptation of Miranda’s
early-aughts musical. “This film changed my life,” says Ramos, who plays Miranda’s
own role, Usnavi, the quick-witted romantic lead. “It’s one of the most special things
I’ve ever done.” (His mother and sister cameo in certain numbers.) Last month, Ramos
released his debut studio album, The Good & The Bad, an R&B paean to familial
love, whose music video for the album’s single, “Dear Diary,” dropped last summer.
