READ Carmen Maria Machado, author of
the award-winning short-story collection
Her Body and Other Parties, returns with a
memoir, In the Dream House. Through 144 mini
chapters, Machado offers a complex portrait
of a psychologically abusive relationship she
was once in with another woman. As one
chapter both begins and ends, “Most types
of domestic abuse are completely legal.”READ Natasha Stagg’s Sleeveless, a mix
of fiction and nonfiction, offers an almost
brutally clear-eyed depiction of life amid New
York’s intersecting circles of fashion, art, and
culture in the 2010s. “What defines our time,

being surveyed and surveilled...and we are, as
