Where we’ve been

Of course the downside is... the
party always comes to you. But then
the journey home to bed, up a single
flight of stairs and into the loving,
warm embrace of our bedroom, one
of the few sacred, beer-free spaces in
the home, only takes a moment.
However you choose to party,
entertain or celebrate this holiday
season I hope you’ll find plenty of
good ideas and inspiration inside
this issue. I wouldn’t completely
recommend turning your house
into a brewpub, but there are those
days when it does feel like a stroke
of genius, with only a few medium-
sized compromises.

M

y husband is a passionate
home brewer. As with many
passions, the accoutrements
of his hobby have slowly
made their way into our lives and
living spaces. A quaint workshop in
our backyard I once envisioned as
a greenhouse has been transformed
into a small bar replete with hand-
fashioned oak bar, upcycled stools,
two beers on tap and a revolving
selection of bottles.
The garage transitioned into a
microbrewery some time ago, our
car left unsheltered on the street to
face the elements, sometimes several
blocks away during busy periods at the
Greek Orthodox Church across the
road. I often find beer bubbling away
under the dining table or lining the
laundry benches if conditions in the
shed aren’t quite right.
Of course there are upsides to
having a small brewery in your home.
For starters, the party always comes
to you. We have a pre-prepared and
designated entertaining space that
never runs dry (so far, at least). We’ve
made friends with neighbours and
local businesses all by having them
over for an impromptu beer or two.
