- Patriots (previous: 1):
They clearly deserve top spot.
But Tom Brady getting sacked a
season-high four times Sunday
and mounting injuries show
even they’re vulnerable. - Saints (3):Teddy Bridge-
water is now attacking deep.
The defense has elevated. Alvin
Kamara isn’t being overused.
Drew Brees will return fresh.
Things couldn’t be much better. - Chiefs (2):The talent is
undeniable, but so are weak-
nesses – Pat Mahomes’ ankle,
receivers and their timing get-
ting disrupted, and a defense
bludgeoned for 569 rushing
yards over the last three weeks. - Lions (4):If the season
ended today, they’d make the
playoffs. With their next two
games against the Packers and
the Vikings, it’s time for Detroit
to prove it has staying power. - Packers (5):Green Bay’s
only 1,000-yard rusher since
2010? Eddie Lacy. NFL TD lead-
er Aaron Jones brings depth to
a one-dimensional attack. - 49ers (8):Monday was
rookie Nick Bosa’s coming-out
party (2 sacks, 1 forced fumble,
1 fumble recovery).
- Eagles (9): They’ve
earned a share of first atop the
NFC East, but it could be tough
to keep with their next three at
Minnesota, Dallas and Buffalo. - Bills (11):No team west of
Foxborough is playing better
defense. - Vikings (12):A get-right
game was nice, but no team is
throwing less often. How does
that jibe with the diva tenden-
cies creeping into locker room? - Bears (7):Who would’ve
guessed Khalil Mack would
suffer a disappearing act
against Oakland? Their offense
is not good enough to survive
even a minor defensive lapse. - Seahawks (17):The MVP
drumbeat for Russell Wilson is
legitimate and deserved. But
don’t forget 4-1 Seattle is a few
unlucky bounces from 1-4. - Colts (24):Justin Hous-
ton got revenge in Kansas City.
It’s time for Indy to heal up fol-
lowing an impressive win. - Cowboys (6):After feast-
ing on Division II foes early in
the season, they draw the D-III
Jets Sunday. - Buccaneers (13):They’re
tough – G Alex Cappa didn’t
miss a snap despite a broken
arm Sunday – and tough to
beat. But the league’s worst
pass D is getting them beat.
- Rams (14):Aaron Donald
has one sack. Todd Gurley isn’t
among the league’s top 15 rush-
ers. Jared Goff isn’t among the
top 25 rated passers. Is this
sustainable? - Ravens (16):Lots to like,
but they might be the AFC’s
version of the Cowboys. - Panthers (18):Only one
player (Chris Johnson) in the
NFL’s 100 seasons has exceed-
ed 2,500 yards from scrim-
mage. Christian McCaffrey is
on pace for nearly 2,800. - Texans (19):Only Russell
Wilson is playing more effi-
ciently than Deshaun Watson
(115.9 rating). That will be test-
ed at Kansas City and Indian-
apolis over the next two weeks. - Raiders (23):Good pass
rushers are hard to find, Coach?
Oakland got four sacks Sunday,
its most since 2015 when Khalil
Mack didn’t have one of them. - Chargers (10):They’re
below .500 at this point for the
fourth time in five years. They
didn’t overcome any of those
starts to reach the playoffs.
- Jaguars (20): Second-
year WR DJ Chark Jr. has been
overshadowed by Gardner
Minshew but is one of the
league’s surprises, leading the
AFC with five TD grabs. - Titans (21): Special
teams have given them prob-
lems. As tough as Tennessee is,
not a good enough team to
overcome missed FG attempts
and muffed punts. - Browns (15):Nine first
downs and 180 yards? Four
turnovers? Three points? Did
Hue Jackson sneak back into
the building? - Giants (25): Given
mothballed QB Eli Manning’s
penchant for slaying the Patri-
ots, don’t you have to put him
back in the lineup this week? - Broncos (28):Apparent-
ly #FakeNews is infiltrating the
NFL, this weekend’s most ridic-
ulous rumor being Von Miller
on the trade block. - Falcons (26):Want one
snapshot something is amiss?
TE Austin Hooper has more
catches (34) and receiving
yards (363) than Julio Jones. - Steelers (22):Who could
have guessed they might rue
that early-season trade of
backup QB Joshua Dobbs to
Jacksonville?
- Cardinals (29):Maybe
redub the offense “Ground
Raid”? It apparently works
much better when Arizona runs
the ball (season-high 266 yards
in Sunday’s win). - Bengals (30):Speaking
of running the ball, Cincinnati
really doesn’t ... and hasn’t had
a rush go for more than 18 yards
this season. - Jets (27):Brutal in Sam
Darnold’s absence. The offense
is averaging fewer than 180
yards per game and 14.3 yards
per drive. M-E-S-S, mess,
mess, mess. - Redskins (31):Advice to
Jay Gruden? Grab a beer – may-
be invite Trent Williams – and
celebrate yeoman’s work after
keeping this organization rele-
vant for most of your tenure,
making Kirk Cousins a star and
lasting as long as you did in a
volatile environment. - Dolphins (32):The foot-
ball gods are serving up an op-
ponent in even more turmoil
than the Fins with the ’Skins
headed to Miami. Now we find
out if tanking is real.
NFL POWER RANKINGS POST-WEEK 5 EDITION
NFC North teams find home in Top 10
Nate Davis
USA TODAY
They’ll look to execute that
plan Sunday against the 0-
Jets, whose 66 rushing yards
per game rank third worst in
the league, ahead only of the
Bengals and Dolphins. The
Cowboys have allowed at least
117 rushing yards in three of
their five contests, including
both losses. Players and coach-
es said they will hammer fur-
ther this week on basic funda-
mentals, setting the edge, gap
fits, assignments and aggres-
sive tackling. But players from
the largely intact fifth-best run
D in 2018 left this Packers loss
baffled by a Green Bay team
they had felt prepared to take
on. The Cowboys insisted they
weren’t surprised by scheme as
much as they failed to execute.
“A poor performance by me,”
second-year linebacker Leigh-
ton Vander Esch lamented,
adding to his list of issues “bad
footwork” and “bad tackling.”
Lineman Tyrone Crawford said
simply: “We messed up and we
have to fix that.”
With Cowboys nose tackle
Antwaun Woods (knee) ex-
pected to work more into prac-
tice this week, one key cog in
clogging the lane should soon
return. But the front seven will
need to improve its communi-
cation to reduce the rampant
missed tackles they fell victim
to against Green Bay. They
can’t let the threat of a mobile
quarterback derail their gap
coverage inside.
“We know firsthand that
when you’ve got to defense a
quarterback like Rodgers, you
got to contain him,” owner Jer-
ry Jones said. “You also got to
defend him. We let him out of
containment quite a bit, and
you saw what he did to us.
When you’re doing all that, that
opens those lanes up.
“The story of the game were
the turnovers and our inability
to stop the run. ... That was a lit-
tle surprising to not be able to
stop their run better than we
did tonight.”
ARLINGTON, Texas – On
Aaron Jones’ first touchdown,
he pointed to the AT&T Stadi-
um ceiling before gathering his
teammates in the end zone,
arms crossed, to mug for a cam-
eraman.
“This is my house,” he ex-
claimed after his second TD ad-
vanced the Packers’ rout of the
Cowboys on Sunday.
By his third, Jones was wav-
ing goodbye to Cowboys cor-
nerback Byron Jones before he
even broke into the end zone.
Aaron Jones carried the ball
with one hand while waving
with the other.
So by Jones’ fourth TD, a 1-
yard punch up the middle, the
running back blew a kiss to the
cameraman. Quarterback Aar-
on Rodgers raised four fingers
to count them off.
The Cowboys’ defense
seemed unable to point even
one finger at an answer.
“There’s no question we
didn’t tackle well,” linebacker
Sean Lee said. “That’s some-
thing we usually hang our hat
on. ... Just traditionally, that’s
what we do.”
The Cowboys’ 34-24 loss
reads as much closer than how
the game unfolded. With 2:10 to
play in the third quarter, the
Cowboys trailed 31-3. Jones
had scored four TDs before the
Cowboys scored one. And he
became the first opponent in
the Cowboys’ franchise history,
now in its 60th year, to gash
Dallas for four rushing TDs.
By the time the defense re-
grouped to allow just 14 yards of
offense in the fourth quarter, it
was too late.
“We can’t wait for a couple of
explosive runs to decide that,
‘Oh, we’re going to buckle up
and trust each other and play
more disciplined,’ ” linebackers
coach Ben Bloom said. “We
need to do that from the start of
the game.”
Aaron Jones
left the
Cowboys’
defense
looking for
answers after
he rushed for
107 yards and
four TDs on
Sunday.
