  1. At a distance, the body of the boats cannot be seen over the
    horizon; only the sails are visible.

  2. The near boat overlaps the far boats, connecting separate elements
    in the picture and creating a sense of depth.

  3. Show a line of water behind the boat, so that the boat appears to be
    sandwiched between a current in front and a current in back.

  4. By showing a sliver of the far side of the hull, the part to the right
    of the center line, the boat appears to be three-dimensional.

  5. The boom is traveling back into the distance, which means
    perspective causes it to taper.
