Basic Drawing Made Amazingly Easy (Made Amazingly Easy Series)

Now that we’ve covered the essentials of drawing the features, we’ll
create the framework in which to put them. The foundation shape of
the human head is a simple egg, turned so that the wide end is on top
and the narrower end is on the bottom.
We can see immediately that the forehead takes up a good deal of
space. This fact is often concealed by the hairline. For artists, it is
important to become familiar with the head’s true proportions and not
allow details such as hair to alter the underlying structure.

In the front view, it’s very important to line up all the features
symmetrically, which means placing them on an even level so that
the face doesn’t appear lopsided. The eyes are on an even level; so
are the ears and nostrils. The mouth is centered, unless an expression
tugs it to one side. Use the vertical center line and the horizontal eye
line as guideposts.
