When drawing a front view, don’t shy away from portraying the
subject as though she were looking directly at the viewer. The
straight-ahead look communicates a degree of openness. That said,
it’s not a requirement that a character make eye contact. Eyes cast
downward read as reflective, or even sad. Eyes looking into the
distance can appear hopeful or wistful. Keep in mind, though, that a
hard shift of the eyes to the side in a front view can be misinterpreted
as cunning or scheming.
