Nice: Limit your brushes. Digital

Great news: If you are drawing on your laptop or tablet com-
puter, there is a lot of great software to choose from. All of them
basically act like giant art stores, presenting a wide range of
materials and styles to select from. This is great, but don’t let it
overwhelm you. Think of it like this: The best way to walk into
a store is to buy only what you need and get out. Don’t get me
wrong, browsing is fun, but if you’re not careful, you might end
up buying a bunch of stuff you don’t really need.
Current software offers a lot of interesting capabilities, and it
is fun to browse around to see what you can do. But what if you
are working from life and the poses are short?

I posed this question to Jason Dunn, who works on his tablet
at The Drawing Club. His advice is to limit your brushes. In
other words, try using only two, maybe three different brushes
maximum and just alter their size when needed. This is great
advice and it makes sense, too, because when I think about it,
I limit the brush choices for my oil and acrylic painting students
as well. I find that too many variables can confuse them and
hinder progress. So, if you want to do some digital painting,
remember to keep it simple. Limiting your brushes is a good start.
