In 1833 what would seem like a harmless
feud between businessmen would go
terribly wrong...

In September of that year, The Magpie
Miners would attempt to sabotage the
neighbouring Redsoil mine which lies
only a mere 100 yards east by lighting
straw and coal tar to try and smoke out
the workers and stop production. Instead
of just trying to make these miners leave
their posts this damaging act would take
the life of three innocent miners, Thomas
Wager, Isaac Bagshaw and Francis Taylor
who suffocated to death from inhalation
of the fumes.

In that same year 18 Magpie miners would
now be put on trial for murder although
many of them were freed immediately
and later all would be acquitted due to
insufficient evidence on being able to
identify the actual culprits.

From that day, it is said that the widows
of the miners who tragically died
would then place a curse upon Magpie
Mine. Although this could be taken as
nonsense, it is a documented fact that
over the years this mine began to receive
a lot of bad luck with flooding and other
phenomena which would cease the
production.

MAGPIE MINE:

The Widow’s Curse

ituated in the beautifully
picturesque peak district of
Derbyshire lies the remains
of what was once a fully
functioning lead mine. This
area of the peak district has been
used for mining for decades and
Magpie Mine itself began its first
production in the year 1740. The
mine was open and closed several
times in its lifespan and during the
years it has generated a plethora of
ghost stories.

For many years the Magpie Mine
would go through several disputes
with its neighbouring mines who
were all in competition with one
another. It was a well-known fact
that parties from each of the
different mines in the area would
send their workers out to sabotage
the others at an attempt to stop
production from one mine and thus
resulting in stealing their business.
