This issue’s photoshoot took place at the home of empty nesters Butch and
Lydia Overby.
This 3-story Colonial 4-Square was built in 1902 by a local doctor. He sold it two
years later, and eventually it was purchased by a family who kept it for three
generations. The Overby’s bought the house from them in 2013.
It took nine months of renovating and remodeling; Butch and Lydia kept much
of the original materials, such as trim, fireplaces, and flooring. The ornate
doorknobs were made circa 1890. The kitchen and bathrooms, however, were
gutted and completely redone.
Lydia describes her home as “modern vintage.” She loves old things, and at
the same time appreciates a modern spin. Her favorite spaces are her sewing
room and the kitchen. Her sewing room is the entire third floor—a 400 square
foot finished attic. Here is where Lydia free-motion quilts for herself and for
others. The kitchen includes a sink large enough for bathing grandbabies. Last
year Butch and Lydia’s son, daughter-in-law, and 1-year-old son, George, came
to visit. Lydia walked into the kitchen one, pleasantly surprised to see her son
bathing little George in the sink.
The Overbys are thrilled to have created a comfortable, welcoming
environment enjoyed by family and friends. For these empty nesters, this house
is full of love and joy.
