“I promise that by the time you are adults, the meat

you eat will not come from dead animals. You can

come find me and beat me up if I’m wrong.”
—IMPOSSIBLE FOODS CEO PATRICK BROWN at a children’s event at Impossible headquarters

The amount in fines companies
will have to pay each day for
selling plant-based products

in Louisiana with packaging using words such
as “beef” and “meat.” Under the so-called “Truth
in Labeling” legislation signed by Gov. John Bel
Edwards—designed explicitly to protect the
animal-agriculture industry—
using the term “meat” on
packaging would be limited
to products made only
from the carcasses of
alligators, chickens, cows,
crawfish, deer, pigs,
rabbits, shrimp,
and turtles.

BASKIN-ROBBINS, the world’s largest ice cream

than 2,500 locations nationwide. The company says it
tested the non-dairy options, both made using almond

ensure the texture and flavors were just right.

MEAT & MONEY

MATTERS

Plant-based meat is on the cusp of
becoming cheaper than animal flesh,
according to a new report by the Good Food
Institute. The food nonprofit noted that the
next focus for companies like Beyond Meat
and Impossible Foods will be scaling up
production, which will drive prices down. A
switch to lower-cost ingredients (such as
lupin beans and sunflower seeds instead
of rice and peas) will also help, says senior
scientist Liz Specht, explaining that “it’s all but
inevitable that the plant-based meat industry
will eventually be cost-competitive with
conventional meat. In fact, this tipping point
may hit relatively soon.”
