had a busy 2019. If he wasn’t publishing
new research in support of plant-based
nutrition or teaching as an Adjunct
Associate Professor of Medicine at
George Washington University, he
was donning an activist hat with his
non-profit advocacy group Physicians
Committee for Responsible Medicine(PCRM). As the organization’s president
and founder, Barnard and his 12,000
colleagues worked to stop the spread
of dangerous misinformation with a
campaign aimed at Belgium’s Royal
Academy of Medicine, debunking its
report claiming plant-based diets were
unsuitable for children and expectant
mothers. In April, PCRM sued the USDAM

as a vegan restaurateur
began in 2004 with a
single restaurant, New
York City’s landmark
eatery Pure Food & Wine,
which did what no other restaurant before it
had done: make raw vegan food sexy. Fifteen
years later, Kenney has built an empire on a
solid foundation of plant-based values, with
more than 35 eateries either in the works or
already gaining critical acclaim from Boston
to Bahrain. Outposts include five Double Zero
locales (featuring elevated pizza), three Make
Out locations (specializing in raw dishes and
feel-good elixirs), and two fast-casual eateries
in Orlando (slinging everything from cheese
fries and Oreo milkshakes to burgers adorned
with cremini mushroom confit and truffle
cream). Should you find yourself in one of the
few places Kenney hasn’t broken ground, his
Plant Made line of frozen meals will debut in
major retailers like Walmart and Sprouts. Never
have so many high-quality vegan food options
cropped up so quickly—evidence of both the
inevitability of a nourishing, plant-based future
