BEST DAY TRIPS

FROM LISBON

Heading to the Portuguese capital? Stay a little longer and venture

further afield to beaches, chic coastal towns and fairytale palaces

Words: Connor McGovern

Visitors quickly fall for Lisbon’s charms. Hardly
surprising in a city that has it all: vibrant
neighbourhoods, ine food and rich cultural
heritage. As a result, many visitors don’t venture
out of the city itself, but those who do are well
rewarded. Lisbon provides the perfect base from
which to discover some of western Portugal’s
natural and cultural treasures, and its good -quality
local transport network means many excursions
are an easy train or bus ride away. Within an hour,
visitors can be exploring sandy strands with some
of Europe’s best surf; decadent mountain palaces
with intriguing pasts; historic towns and villages;
and vineyards, forests and wild natural parks that
teem with wildlife.
