fter a brief look at some dates in
Chronicle of the 20th Century
relating to previous Saturn-
Neptune sextiles, if I could come up
with a key phrase to characterize what
I’m seeing it might be “how to make
things worse.” The first thing I did was
to find an earlier sextile that resembled
this one (i.e., with Saturn in a sign
earlier than Neptune, and connected
with a major event). And there it was:
July 1, 1947, right in the middle of
the period during which Crown rule
(i.e., British rule over India) ended.
The agreement that paved the way for
Indian independence probably sounded
like it would work out just fine, since
it would relieve the British of an
obligation taken on in the 19th centuryprimarily in order to ensure control of
a steady flow of wealth from India to
the United Kingdom at a time when
doing so had become more and more
troublesome. During the 20th century,
a well-organized independence move–
ment had taken root and grown into
a powerful force, and ending the
difficulty of dealing with it would not
actually end the economic benefits that
India’s colonial ruler was getting.
On June 3, an agreement satisfactory
to all parties on how to do this, called
the Mountbatten Plan, was reached,
and was passed into law in July, with
the final stamp of approval from King
George VI added on July 18, 1947,
with the independence date specified
as August 15, 1947. All well and good,
