BLESSINGS L IZ ZO
This year undoubtedly belongs to Lizzo.
Her standout performance at the 2O19
BET Awards won her a superfan in Rihanna
and her new album Cuz I Love You
(self-described as ‘church with a twerk’)
brings powerful positivity that leaves you
spiritually shook. As the American singer-
rapper-flautist embarks on her UK tour
(6–11 November), we take a look at her
self-help mantras – shelovesa mantra.
1.TO GET YOU OVER
A RELATIONSHIP
‘You’re ’posed to hold me down,
but you’re holding me back, and that’s
the sound of me not calling you back.’
From: Truth Hurts
2.TO HELP YOU SET YOURSELF
NO LIMITS
‘Woke up feeling like
I might just run for president.’
From: Like A Girl

3.TO REMIND YOU (AGAIN) TO
FOCUS ON SELF-CARE
‘True love finally happens when
you by yourself.’
From: Soulmate
4.TO CHANNEL YOUR
INNER YOGI
‘Got to take a deep breath, time
to focus on you.’
From: Good As Hell

PAULA REGO
Considered one of the greatest living
painters, a retrospective of Dame Paula
Rego’s work opens at the Scottish National
Gallery of Modern Art (from 23 November).
It includes unseen etchings from her
abortion series – as Germaine Greer said,
‘[Rego’s paintings] quiver with an anger and
compassion of which we have sore need.’
VS
MARIA HELENA VIEIRA DA SILVA
In some ways ‘the female Picasso’, Lisbon’s
Vieira da Silva established new approaches
to abstract painting. In a travelling exhibition,
her work comes to London’s Waddington
Custot gallery (from 3O November).
