BECKY BURGUM
My look is quite bold and garish. I’ll
wear as many animal prints, patterns
and colours as possible. I don’t really
feel like me if I wear something plain.
I think working in the fashion industry
definitely lets me be braver with my style.
And if you have out-there clothes, that
becomes your thing. People just assume
you’re confident. It’s the ‘fake it ’til you
make it’ approach. When I was growing
up, I quite liked my clothes being the first
thing people noticed about me, instead
of my body or how I looked.
I used to feel quite self-conscious in
a long dress or anything below the knee,
because it felt too grown-up. But now I
love the feeling of taking up space with
a larger-than-life dress. Big dress energy
is real and it makes me feel powerful.

As a Muslim blogger, I want to show that you can mix faith with
style. Growing up in the noughties, with so much bodycon around,
modest dressing was definitely a challenge. We sur vived by
layering, which is cool now, but didn’t look so good back then.
I used to wear my headscarf every day, but in the past year
I’ve decided to take the pressure off myself and just wear it when
I feel like it. I’ve had a bit of backlash and it would be easy to
focus on the negative. But, actually, most of the comments have
been overwhelmingly supportive.
I still struggle sometimes with confidence. It’s a journey. But
since turning 30, I don’t care as much. Everything’s acceptable
now, style-wise. If you’re confident, you can pull off anything.
