W
e all know the old adage, but how
you’re eating your apples might
make all the difference to whether
or not that doctor does keep away. While in
the past the benefits of this fruit have been
attributed to its skin, new research by an
Austrian university has found that it’s the
pulp and seeds that contain the most gut-
friendly bacteria. What’s more, the
researchers also found potentially
dangerous bacteria on the skins of non-
organic supermarket-bought apples. The
verdict? Have your daily dose, but try to
stick to local and organic varieties
wherever possible.

It’s always nice to hear when big
brands take a step to becoming more
sustainable. Nike has just launched
a range of new footwear collections
using plant-based dyes, recycled
leather and other leftover materials,
aiming to reduce the impact of trainer
production on the environment. It has
a new chief sustainability officer, too.
