Hilary Harper loves radio’s ability
to connect people through
storytelling, a practice that
transcends time, space and
football codes. With 30 years’
experience, Hilary has covered
everything from news and current
affairs to traffic reporting, food, health, gardening, science,
finance, arts, education and relationships. She is curious
about everything that affects us through different stages
of our lives. Her own life goal is to one day own enough
bookshelves. She presents Life Matters on Radio National.
What do you love about hosting Life Matters? It’s
one of the most varied, interesting, challenging and
personal shows on RN. I love hearing stories from all
around the country, and being given an insight into
listeners’ lives, as they share their thoughts with us.
Does gardening and the environment feature on
the show? I’ve come to feel the whole of Australia is our
garden and environs lately! We’ve been doing stories on
urban greening; water infrastructure and parched
gardens in regional Australia; verge gardening; and the
nurturing of roadside natives on our major highways.
Listening to stories from arid, temperate, tropical and
alpine landscapes makes me feel connected to the
country as a huge, diverse and wonderful entity.
What does your own garden mean to you? My garden
is in a sad state of disrepair due to children, work and the
siren call of books, but it still faithfully produces salad
greens all year, and our sturdy mandarin tree has been a
winter lifesaver. It’s a refuge from the inside chores and
a space to let my mind wander.
