UPA R KOT

FORT
The Uparkot Fort (which means the upper citadel)
is the oldest fort in the city, and central to any visit
to Junagadh. Situated at the foot of the scenic
Girnar Hills, this magnificent fortress was built by
Chandragupt Maurya in 319 BC,and is believed
to have withstood 16 sieges over a period of 800
years. The fort’s strategic location and magnificent
architecture foiled most attempts of forced entry.
Take a tour and marvel at the various temples,
mosques, caves and other architectural structures in
and around Uparkot Fort (www.gujarattourism.com;
7am – 7pm; entry: ` 5).

WHY YOU SHOULD VISIT: To marvel at the
perfect blend of Hindu and Muslim architectural
styles, and to soak in the beauty of this magnificent
piece of art with its complex and ornate triple
gateway entrance with 70-feet-high walls,
surrounded by a deep moat. History enthusiasts,
this one’s for you!
