I recently took the Bar Exam (32 years after
taking it the first time!). I had completed over
200 hours of lectures and thousands of test
questions in preparation. After the two days of
testing, I walked away and stopped worrying
about it completely. Many of my friends
couldn’t understand why I wasn’t worried
about how I did and couldn’t understand how
I could wait six weeks for results. Here’s the
thing: once the test was turned in, there was
absolutely nothing I could do to change my
results.

Fall and winter cake shows are here and
you will invest your heart and soul into your
entries. You will give your very best effort and
then you will place it on the table for judging.
And then you need to ‘act like a lawyer’ and let
it go. After a lawyer finishes his argument to
the jury, they have to let it go. The decision is
in their hands and stressing or obsessing over
‘should haves’ and ‘could haves’ only steals
your energy. Place your cake for judging and
then go enjoy the cake show experience. Don’t
watch them judge your cake. Don’t try to listen
in to what they’re saying. Don’t add that stress
to your life.

Go enjoy the demos. Go admire the work of
your fellow competitors. Go shop. Visit with
your friends and reconnect with everything
you love about cake. There is not one single
thing you can do after you turn in your entry
that will change how it is going to be judged.
It breaks my heart to watch people filled with
angst about the judging. They are missing all of
the great parts of these cake shows. I know it
is hard to change how you handle the anxiety,
but I promise you will be so much happier if
you can try to let it go. Life is happening all
around you and if you aren’t careful, you’ll miss
out on some truly beautiful moments.

We are in awe of Julie

delicate ballerina shoes and
