Adding a light source
Now the face is nicely framed
by the hair. The sketch reads well in
thumbnail form, while the shape and
anatomy – although still quite
stylised – is working. I want to give
the portrait a light source from above
so I apply a black and white gradient
over the sketch using the Overlay
layer mode.

Bring in blocks of
flat value
I add in blocks of f lat values using a
large brush, which further helps me
to achieve the correct proportions.
I use an oval brush to do both the
line work and block-in. I’m zoomed
out a lot of the time during this stage.
I don’t have too many keybindings in
Photoshop, but one function that I
use a lot is Flip canvas, which I’ve
bound to Ctrl+Alt+Q.
