SHOPPING ADVICE

AT THE beginning of the classic 1980 s
office rom-com Working Girl, Melanie
Griffith’s character arrives at the
Wall Street investment bank where
she dreams of climbing the cor-
porate ladder and swaps the
white Reebok high-tops she
wears with a skirt suit on her
morning commute for a pair
of pointy black pumps.
“OMG, that scene feels so
dated!” says beauty entrepre-
neur Maria Hatzistefanis,
a.k.a. @mrsrodial, as the
founder and CEO of skin-
care brand Rodial is known to
the one million Instagram fol-
lowers who like her boss-lady-in-
Balenciaga-Triple-S-sneakers selfies.
“I always hated the implicit message that
sneakers make a woman look lame.”
Hatzistefanis believes that dressing for success

reserved for the street. “I speak at a lot of tech conferences and
I wanted a shoe that was comfortable and cool, as I’m on my
feet all day,” she says. “I always wear them with something more

Wardrobe.NYC and a long-sleeved tee.” And by the looks of
it, she’s far from alone in her affinity for the once humble shoe.

global buying director of Net-a-

category is one of the fastest
growing for the luxury e-tailer,
with Gucci, Saint Laurent,
Givenchy, Veja, and Golden
Goose among the top sellers.
There will be a 20 percent
increase in the number of
styles for the upcoming
season, she says, thanks in
part to seven new sneaker-only
brands added to the site so far
this year, including, yes, Reebok.
These days, there’s truly a shoe

specimens, like leopard-print low-tops, can give
a boilersuit flair, while neon mesh sneakers balance
out the sweetness of a floral dress. Sneakers are a surprisingly
versatile trend—you can wear them just as you would sport a
fashion pump. “They work well with dresses, trousers, and
skirts for a day at the office,” says von der Goltz. “I think they
convey a certain level of ease and confidence in a very modern
way. It’s the ultimate high-low pairing.” ■
