WANT TO FEEL your best in the
buff? Don’t stress so much about size:
It’s really about looking firmer and
smoother—basically, in shape. Here,
the most efficient ways to get there.

HIGH-TECH CHEATS “In the
past five years, there’s been a boon
in what we can do for the body,”
says Paul Jarrod Frank, M.D., a New
York dermatologist. He says that
half of his days are now spent on
procedures designed for below the
neck. What do patients want? “Above
all, tighter, more toned skin.”
For example, Emtone: Newly
cleared by the FDA for the treatment
of cellulite and loss of skin tone, it
uses thermal radio frequency to
tighten skin by stimulating collagen,
while mechanical shock wave ther-
apy breaks up fibrous bands, smooth-
ing out a rippled surface. Emtone
is performed in four sessions over
two weeks ($3, 600 total). Frank
often pairs Emtone with his Biostim
injections ($2,500–$5, 000 each).
By hyper-diluting facial fillers like
Radiesse and Sculptura—and inject-
ing them in sagging, dimpled areas—
dermatologists can boost collagen
and elastin production. “It gives you
that ‘wow’ effect of Botox or filler,
only for the body,” he says.
When it comes to building muscle, workouts are non-
negotiable, but now you can fast-track your results. Emsculpt
and CoolTone are two FDA-cleared devices that use magnetic
energy to induce contractions at a rate that’s impossible to achieve
at the gym. Bonus: Emsculpt destroys some fat in the process.
After four 30 -minute sessions over two weeks ($3,000–$4, 000
per package), these painless (though odd-feeling) treatments
can improve muscle mass by 15 to 20 percent. The biggest
breakthrough? Although Emsculpt was originally approved for
the abs and glutes, the brand has just released a small contour
applicator that can be used on the biceps, triceps, and calves.
For optimal results, plan for touch-ups throughout the year.

BETTER WORKOUTS “If you
want to look better naked, the
areas to focus on are your mid-
section and lower body,” says
Khaleah London, a group fitness
instructor at Equinox. Toning
those areas will make the great-
est difference in your general
appearance. For this, London
loves a sequence of classic Pilates
moves known as the Series of
Five. This mat workout forces
you to engage your core as you
bring your legs and arms toward
your center in quick, controlled
movements. (She recommends
trying Tracey Mallett’s YouTube
video.) “You’re simultaneously
engaging your midsection, glutes,
and hamstrings,” explains Lon-
don. Even better, this mat routine
typically clocks in at just five
minutes. Another option? Lateral
or reverse lunges with a shoulder
press. By lunging to the side or
backward—while lifting eight-
pound weights over your head—
you can tone both your arm and
leg muscles. Combine either of
these routines with regular cardio
for the best outcome.

SKIN SAVIORS Unfortunately
there’s no magic cream that can
radically transform the look of arms and legs. The skin on
the body is thicker and heavier than that on the face, so it’s
harder for products—even those with active ingredients—to
make a meaningful difference, says Ranella Hirsch, M.D., a
dermatologist in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Instead, focus on
prevention. “There’s a reason derms figure your real age out
from the décolleté and hands,” says Hirsch. “Those are the
places people don’t protect, and we can see the effects like
sagging and dark spots.” Stave off future damage with a body
lotion containing SPF. For an instant fix, try the new Pradas
Glow Skin Essential Hydration Infusion Serum ($56), which
imparts a subtle sheen while firming and plumping. ■
